Something of an odd one out in that quartet, it’s the only non L-series lens released for the RF line to date, although that will soon change with the arrival of the RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM later this year. It’s also around half the price of the next cheapest lens in the system, while its focal length and aperture, combined with the fact that it’s a prime lens, also allow it to be considerably smaller and lighter than every other option so far. All of this should mean it holds particular appeal for EOS RP owners who’d like to start exploring the native lens selection but find their camera bodies – and/or wallets – overwhelmed by the other current native offerings. The mount is metal and build quality overall appears to be perfectly good. The legendary Canon 50mm legacy has been reborn for the RF mount. This lens in the EF mount was a go-to for all fashion and portrait photographers for over a decade. It provided a unique rendering not seen in any other Canon lens, with almost a medium format look to its images.

This is among the sharpest fast wide lenses made, but lens sharpness has nothing to do with picture sharpness; every lens made in the past 100 years is more than sharp enough to make super-sharp pictures if you know what you're doing. The only limitation to picture sharpness is your skill as a photographer. It's the least talented who spend the most time worrying about lens sharpness. Skilled photographers make great images with whatever camera is in their hands; I've made some of my best images of all time with an irreparably broken camera! Most pixels are thrown away before you see them, but camera makers don't want you to know that. The actual figure will vary from person to person and with the shooting conditions, but I found I got around 40% of my handheld images sharp when I used a shutter speed of 0.6 second, which equates to a compensation of around 4 stops. Canon RF 24mm F1.8 Verdict

No focus or other scales. Everything is read-out, including distance, in the viewfinder or rear LCD, so that's even better than having it on-lens. With its focal length of 24mm and a maximum aperture of f/1.8, you’d expect to see vignetting at the wider aperture settings, along with some barrel distortion. And that’s certainly the case if you decide to turn off the automatic correction profiles when you process the raw files. However, with the profiles applied, any bowing of straight lines is corrected and most of the vignetting is removed.

Coma, or sagittal coma flare, is often seen with fast normal to wide lenses as weird batwing shapes on bright points of light in the corners at night. Canon EOS R5 with Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM (1/320 sec, f/2, ISO100) (Image credit: James Artaius) Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM verdict

The macro is defined to be from 1:1 to 10:1. Anything smaller than 1:1 magnification is close-up photography. And close-up photography starts from 1:1 and ends at 1:10 ratio. Closing the aperture to f2 reduces the vignette more than anything else, but as you close further to f2.8 the bokeh blbs in the corners become more circular and there’s greater evidence of the 9-blade aperture system.

The lens has been put together well and handles nicely, and you soon start to appreciate the presence of the Control Ring as you use it to make small tweaks while shooting. The focusing system isn’t the most discreet but it is fast, and it works very well during video shooting. This is very much an all-purpose lens rather than one that’s optimized for any specific task.
